Informing Policy, Improving Safety, and Modernizing Aeromedical Mental Health Policy
SEATTLE—The Pilot Mental Health Campaign (PMHC) proudly announces its partnership with the University of Washington’s Aviation Lab to launch The Health and Aviation University Studies for Evidence-based Reform (HAUSER) Project, a research initiative aimed at catalyzing systemic change in pilot mental health policy.
PMHC has long championed the need for reform in aviation mental health care, seeking to reshape outdated aeromedical regulations that penalize pilots for seeking help. This collaboration with UW builds on that mission by combining PMHC’s advocacy leadership with UW’s interdisciplinary research excellence to explore the intersection of mental wellness, safety, and regulation in aviation.
Carrying the name of the late John Hauser, former commercial aviation student at the University of North Dakota, the HAUSER Project will honor his legacy through investigating public attitudes toward pilot mental health, assessing the true costs of delayed or denied care, and developing data-driven, compassionate recommendations to modernize aeromedical certification. By integrating psychological well-being into training and regulation, the HAUSER Project aims to foster a healthier, more resilient cohort of aviators – a goal at the heart of PMHC’s advocacy.
